I highly recommend a mac, laptop if possible, because they are so easy to use and such a pleasure to write on, research with or do any sort of image/art formatting. I really didn't know anything about macs, and had little interest in the video editing I had heard about, but I love my ibook! It is so straightforward, with great resolution, speed and no viruses. So, as a non computor expert, who really just writes essays and researches, I love my mac. Even typing and the way it is set up is nice.

Sounds like you would do well with a computer that you could spend more time using and less time configuring and fixing. I would then recommend either a Hewlett Packard (HP) system if your used to Windows, or a Mac if you are new to computers.
A few years ago my Mom wanted to buy her first computer and I recommended a Mac to her (which she bought). She now knows ton's about how to use a computer and to be productive with it.
