First use the antivirus and antispyware software you have to run a full system scan. Do it in the windows safe mode. (AVG and avast antivirus softwares are free while a 6 month free trial for Norton is available at pack.google.com. Lavasoft's free Ad-Aware is the best antispyware to my knowledge. Also Windows Defender from Microsoft is good enough for real-time protection). This should identify the problem and most probably would solve it as well. However, if the antivirus software is unable to delete the malware, go to Norton's website and search for the name of the malware detected. Their must be some instructions posted to tackle the problem. You might have to delete the system restore points and as well delete the particular registry entries manually if the virus still regenerates on subsequent boot up of the machine. Good Luck.
PS. If you are still having trouble, use Hijack This and copy the log it generates and post it on some tech help forum. I am sure there will be plenty of people ready to help you out.

If you've got a virus on your system, then you're going to need to be WAY more specific if you're wanting a solution.
Viruses work in hundreds of thousands of different ways, and there's no "global" answer on how to get rid of them.
However, I do suggest you download an antivirus software. I, personally, use McAffee Virus Scan. Always be sure to do regular scans of your system. I scan mine every couple months. I suggest you do it more ofthen than that.
You're also going to need a firewall. The most effective firewalls are physical firewalls, usually built-into a router. You can get those at any electronics store, like Frye's or Best Buy (just talk to a sales rep there, and they'll point you to a powerful and effective firewall/router).
You can also download firewall software. For a novice, a good firewall program would be ZoneAlarm. It's pretty basic and walks you through how to set it up. Anybody can figure it out pretty easily.
Also be sure not to download any strange files, or accept files from people you don't know. Don't open email attatchments unless you're ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that you know what it is. It may look like it might be family photos, but it could actually be a dangerous virus. Be very careful.
Don't download music off of ANY web page. Chances are that it's illegal and may contain malicious code. If you want to download music, use trusted sites like the iTunes store.
I also suggest using a browser that ISN'T Internet Explorer. There are better alternatives to Explorer, such as Mozilla Firefox. It works just like Explorer, but it's safer, more secure, and completely customizable. It covers all the security holes and other glitches that Explorer unfortunately has.
