Its very simple under windows. First check that NIC is installed on you computer in the device manager. If so then right click on Network places (winxp/2000) or network neighbourhood (98) and in the tcp/ip protocol properties assign an ip address like 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 for the first computer and similarly on others. If you are a part of a network get its ip configuration may be on are a part of a DHCP server based network. If so then you dont need to enter the ip address of the network just plug the network cable and wait for acquiring the ip address.
